The Burley Market & Cafe building renovation progress has created a wildly exciting few weeks. I have accumulated an impressive pile of those little paint sample-sized containers in an attempt to find the exact colors I wanted.... I think I could paint another storefront with just my sample containers!
As word is spreading about The Burley Market & Cafe, people seem genuinely excited about different aspects of the market and the same two questions are usually asked. When is it going to open? The answer: likely in March. Read more about that in last week's blog. The other question is usually, "So what is The Burley Market exactly?" The short answer is that it is a farmer's market, retail shop, cafe, and bar. The mission is to bring people together around a table (ours or yours) to enjoy good food, conversation, and create memories.
Let's talk market and retail.
The Burley Market will offer local, high-quality meat as well as eggs, fresh bread, an assortment of Kentucky Proud foods, and beverage items. You'll be able to purchase beef, poultry, pork, lamb, and (occasionally) seafood. We will also offer our very own line of spices, dried herbs, jellies, and jams! When you visit the market you'll find decorative and tabletop items, kitchenware, barware and gifts; If you can use it in the kitchen, dining room, or for entertaining, you may just find it on the shelves at The Burley Market!
My husband, Noel, and I lived away from Cynthiana for a while and were spoiled rather quickly by the availability of farm to table services, farmer's markets with diverse offerings, and access to fresh, locally raised meat. We've really missed a one stop shop to gather our local goods so I am thrilled that we can help make some of these products accessible to Cynthiana residents.
You can appreciate the quality of the food available for purchase in our market, because we'll be utilizing it as ingredients in the cafe kitchen! The Burley Market Cafe will offer a simple, seasonal menu. You won't find four pages of food choices or a cook to order diner atmosphere. Instead, you will have the option of ordering a meal or snack at the counter or grabbing a freshly prepared salad, parfait, or sandwich from the cooler if you are in a hurry to get back to the office or heading home. Of course, we'd love for you to dine in! There will be plenty of seating!
An average weekday breakfast at the Burley Market Cafe will include country ham or sausage biscuits, quiche, oatmeal, yogurt parfaits, juices, and a full espresso bar. Whether you drink your coffee black from a regular ol' pot or want a fancier ristretto-style Americano with two extra shots...we'll have you covered. Freshly roasted beans make great coffee any way you drink it. The breakfast and coffee roast menu will vary with seasonal product availability and we'll change it up every few days to keep it interesting!
For lunch we plan to offer soups, hot and cold sandwiches, paninis, wraps, and salads. Our family cooks A LOT at home and I'm super excited about bringing some interesting flavors and ingredients to Cynthiana! I love mixing up a variety of lettuces and throwing in a bit of the unexpected that makes your taste buds say, 'WOW!' The food won't necessarily be fancy, but some of it may be a little different than what some folks may have had in Cynthiana before. Food diversity and choices are great things! The quality of the ingredients, the interesting twist of familiar recipes, and the fact that all food is homemade in our kitchen will please your palates!
Anyone remember when the old Cheese Store featured a soup and sandwich of the day? They were homemade and wonderful, but when they ran out, then you just had to wait until the next day for another opportunity to grab some soup. This concept is similar to certain dishes at The Burley Market Cafe lunch specials but we'll always feature standard selections.
Dinner and evening hours will be offered on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays at The Burley Market. During the evening, we will continue to serve tasty soups, sandwiches, and salads as well a small plates. For those not familiar with this concept, small plate dining essentially usually refers to small dishes resembling appetizers or small courses, meant for sharing. You don't walk away hungry if you order two or three small plates to make it your dinner and it is a perfect portion to snack on if you just come in for drinks. We'll talk more about our small plates in a future blog. Paired with a great drink, we think you'll enjoy evening dining at The Burley Market.
I can't tell you how many times my husband and I would have liked to meet up for a cocktail with friends in Cynthiana. Sometimes we just want to go out late in the evening, perhaps after a local play or movie, to enjoy drinks and some appetizers in a cozy atmosphere that invites conversation... a place other than our living room. We love our local brewery and having a beer with a burger on the patio at Biancke's. But sometimes we want a different selection of drinks and atmosphere. So, we are creating it. More nightlife is coming to Pike Street!
The Burley Market Cafe will feature a full bar should you wish to enjoy a cold beer with lunch, a bloody mary with brunch, sip fine wine in the evening, or have a craft cocktail in downtown Cynthiana! My husband is most excited about the bourbon. (Seriously....he is really enjoying his market research.)
Perhaps for some locals the idea of a bar equates to a rowdy pool hall. This isn't the case at The Burley Market. If you enjoy having a nice wine with your meal, you can. If you want to have a cocktail after the babysitter comes on Friday night, you can. If cocktails, wine, and beer aren't your thing, no big deal. Enjoy small plates and a great atmosphere where everybody knows your name. (Cue the 'Cheers' theme song.)
Market + Cafe + Bar = The Burley Market
That's The Burley Market in a nutshell.
We can't wait for you to experience it.
